The recent school closures have brought about a crisis in special education. Our children are not receiving the services and instruction that they are entitled to during this crucial period. COVID-19 has also brought about a crisis in our homes as parents and guardians have been asked to essentially homeschool for the remainder of the school year.

Two of my four daughters are schoolteachers. I am watching them valiantly attempt to grapple with the complexities of remote teaching and remote learning for their typical students. But what about special needs students? Frankly, our schools are completely overwhelmed at this point and many special needs students are being denied their right to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE).

I am committed to spreading the word: Special education students must be given access to instruction and services regardless of school closures. That’s the law…plain and simple. Please do not to sign IEP amendments or any other documents that might jeopardize these rights. When in doubt, please call me at Hope4Families.

We are and will remain open throughout this crisis. We will continue to provide special education legal services free of cost to families. We are here to assist you in navigating the disruptions caused by Coronavirus. Don’t hesitate to give me a call.
